Jody Costello is a Home Renovation Planning & Contractor Fraud Expert who founded her website, ContractorsFromHell.com, after a remodeling nightmare. Since then, her mission has been to raise awareness about the risks and realities of hiring and working with contractors, completing renovations successfully and understanding the construction planning process. Through her online course, “The Home Remodeling Bootcamp For Women”, she educates female homeowners on how to protect their families and homes against contractor fraud.
As a consumer advocate, Jody worked with the Enforcement Chief for the CA Contractors State License Board for 17 years where she helped to shape policy and legislation to benefit consumers. She testified before the CA State Senate in favor of consumer protection bills and sat on the “Don’t Get Scammed” panel to advise victims of the 2007 California Wildfires about potential problems and unethical contractors they may encounter when rebuilding. She has been quoted and featured in various media, including People, Money, Success, This Old House magazine, First For Women and the Los Angeles Times.
I’m Jody Costello, founder of ContractorsFromHell.com and I teach women homeowners, how to avoid remodeling disasters and unethical contractors.
I would love to teach your audience how they can avoid scams and unethical contractors.
This April I will be featured in First For Women offering tips on how to avoid remodeling disasters and contractor scams. I’ve also been quoted and featured in outlets like People, Money, Success, This Old House magazine, and the Los Angeles Times.
I founded my website, ContractorsFromHell.com as a result of a remodeling nightmare I went through 18 years ago, where I found myself in a fight for justice and ultimately won. Since then I’ve been advocating for consumers and am committed to educating homeowners on the pitfalls of renovating and contracting.
I’ve been helping homeowners with their renovation and contractor problems for the last 19+ years and it would be my pleasure to share insights with your viewers to help them reduce their exposure to potential remodeling disasters and unethical contractors.
Talking Points:
5 Tips For Avoiding Scams and Unethical Contractors
1.) Background Checks: The importance of doing a thorough background check to reveal any unethical behavior, beyond just a simple license check and referrals.
2.) Controlling your Money: Never pay a large sum upfront, never pay cash and research your states’ contractors laws on downpayment requirements.
3.) Legal Documents: How to avoid having to pay twice for work performed. (A common problem that can be avoided using legal construction documents)
4.) Foolproof Protection: How to avoid the surprise “extra work” invoices and protect your property against Mechanics’ Liens. (Another common problem that can be avoided using protective clauses)
5.) Don’t Be Played: Understanding and protecting yourself from “low ball” bids. ( A tactic used to obtain the job that harms consumers)
